Fall is definitely here. Unfortunately, it is not as brisk as it is where I come from. But! It’s chilly and nippy at night and warm during the day. I can’t complain and really shouldn’t.
Halloween is just next week and thankfully we don’t live in a neighborhood. I’m not one of those neighbors willing to hand out candy to a bunch of crazy little delinquents. I love kids, don’t get me wrong, it’s the parents that need training on how to discipline.
While we’re on the topic of Halloween what do you guys think about it? I wasn’t allowed to celebrate it growing up because of its pagan background. My parents finally let up and allowed me to attend my church’s fall festival. I honestly didn’t know the difference between that and going door to door like a little traveling salesman on the hunt for chocolate. I got to rack up on candy and there wasn’t a bunch of gore and guts to traumatize me.
I definitely believe you can turn a bad thing around into a good thing. Just like the fall festival. What a great way to promote food, fun and fellowship in a community. Our church is having one and it’s going to be huge! They are even including a chili cook-off for the adults. I love it. Personally, I’d love to dress-up, but Jon and I don’t have a costume idea. I don’t think we even have a party we’ll be attending. We’ll probably just lay low that night.
I have been tempted to get little Bella a costume. How cute would she be!? This costume from Target cracked me up…
Even though this costume is HILARIOUS and quite adorable, I would rather spend my money elsewhere. Jon and I are on a tight budget and thankfully, we’re rockin’ it! We’re a little over on groceries, but we’re doing stellar in comparison to months past. Sorry…off topic…I’m A.D.D. today….
So, if you’re going to a Halloween party, what are you going to be?
Some of my ideas were pretty funny AND because I’m on a budget the ideas seem even better. Plus, they’re rather inexpensive if you can find things at thrift stores or just put a hodge-podge together.
Here are some thrifty ideas for costumes on a budget:
A Gold Digger – & I mean the Kanye West type…
What You’ll Need:
–Preferably a long showy gold dress
–A Shovel
–Some overdone make-up and red lips.
Voila! You are now a gold digger looking for your next sugar daddy to prey on.
A Cereal Killer –
What You’ll Need:
–A beaten up t-shirt.
–Little mini cereal boxes with play knives through them.
– Affix the cereal boxes to your shirt with glue.
–Add fake blood / ketchup/red lipstick all over.
You are now a “Cereal” killer…minus the record.
A Zombie – Jon and I have been seeing all these TV shows and references to zombies. This is a super easy costume idea!
What You’ll Need:
–Get some face paint and paint your arms and face grey
–Make your tshirt, pants and shoes grimy and beaten up.
–Darken your hair and put red in it to look like fake blood.
–Get fake teeth.
–Get colored contacts…an unnatural color.
–Last but certainly not least: don’t forget to walk funny with your arms out! And don’t talk….groan like you just had your
tonsils removed.
Congratulations! You are now zombified.
A Cowgirl/Boy – I’ve done this before. It’s easy….and super cheap. I know it’s not that original, but EVERYTHING has been done. No one’s costume is ever technically original. You can make it cute and unique though!
What You’ll Need:
–Cowboy Boots
–Hat
–Wear overalls, a plaid shirt, or just skinny jeans with a plaid shirt. The key is: UTILIZE what you own!
–Brown eye/lip liner to dot on freckles.
–Place your hair in 2 pigtails or 2 braids down the side.
–Talk with a country accent.
–If you have one of those fake horses that are on a stick ….bring it…or putting a huge wound rope around your arm would
complete this look.
Yeehaw! Saddle up and you’re ready to go!
That’s all the suggestions I have. I know they aren’t the greatest….but I’ve never been a huge Halloween girl myself. If you have any funnier ones let me know. I love the HUGE fat suit ones, but they are so expensive! I am sorry…call me a kill-joy, but I’d rather not spend that much for one day. I’m sure my interest levels will change when I have a kiddo, but that still doesn’t mean I have to spend an arm and a leg! Get creative, people! After all, we are in a recession.
Hope you guys have a safe and fun Halloween. If you want to drop by make sure you have a snickers in hand…I’m always a sucker for the minis!
Happppyyy Halloween!
-Hannah
P.S. If you are planning on laying low for Halloween then do something special! Make a yummy hot apple cider, or perhaps roast some pumpkin seeds! (Get some whipped cream and caramel drizzle to place on top of the cider and you have yourself a homemade Starbucks recipe!)
Click on the links above for some great recipes for both! Don’t forget to carve yourself a ghoulish pumpkin!
Have fun!

Love these costume ideas! Halloween can be so expensive.

I know, right?! I can’t wait for the candy aisle to go on sale so I can stock up for Christmas!
I’m not all that into the dressing up part of Halloween either, and I’m also on a pretty tight budget. Great ideas on other ways to enjoy the holiday, though! I spent this past weekend with my little sister and brother carving pumpkins, baking cookies, and crafting. No costumes involved!

Thanks, Kala! We are spending it indoors too. I think we will carve pumpkins, make hot chocolate, and watch a scary movie. Gives me an excuse to snuggle with my hubby!
